How Keira Knightley’s Pregnancy Affected Her Hair Loss

When acclaimed actress Keira Knightley takes on a new role, she truly becomes the character—and that doesn’t mean just perfecting an accent or an attitude. Actresses need to look the part and that often requires changing hairstyles and color. Frequent hair bleaching or dyeing can be damaging, causing breakage, thinning hair and even hair loss.

In an interview with InStyle, Knightley shares her story. “I have dyed my hair virtually every color imaginable, for different films,” she explained. “It got so bad that my hair literally began to fall out of my head.” Keira also revealed that she wore wigs for five years to hide her hair loss.

Then something amazing happened. When Keira became pregnant with her daughter, she noticed her hair starting to grow back. Over the course of her pregnancy, her naturally lush mane returned.

For many women, an increase in estrogen during pregnancy slows down the natural hair-shedding process. In addition, women often eat a healthier diet full of lean proteins and colorful vegetables and take nutritional supplements when they are pregnant, which can improve the overall health and appearance of hair.

However, a few months after childbirth some women notice a reversal of this process. Falling estrogen levels can leave new moms with excessive hair shedding, also known as telogen effluvium, which can last up to a year. If your hair doesn’t return after an extended period, it may be time to talk to your doctor.
