Permanently Restore Your Hair With FUE
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant
FUE is an advanced surgical hair restoration technique that’s less invasive than more traditional hair transplants. This surgical hair loss solution leaves no linear scar and offers permanent results—which means you can grow your own hair back. With FUE, one hair follicle at a time is extracted from your donor area to transplant to your thinning or balding areas. Hair Club will help you find out if surgical hair restoration is right for you.

Next, your hair in the designated donor area will be clipped and a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the scalp. Tiny, circular incisions are then made at the back and/or sides of your head to remove the individual follicular units, which contain 1-4 hairs per unit, or graft. The grafts are subsequently extracted using a small, tweezer-like tool and placed on ice to ensure they remain in optimal condition for transplantation.
Your physician will then create small recipient incisions in your designated thinning areas. The grafts are gently placed into the incision sites, with the units containing 1-2 hairs placed along the hairline in front, and the units with 3-4 hairs on the top and back of the head. This gives you natural-looking density and ultimately, the results you want. There is a true art to properly blending in the newly transplanted hairs with your current growth. The leading hair restoration physicians at Bosley Medical Group have years of experience doing this to ensure your final look is seamless.
Your transplanted hair follicles will begin to heal quickly, as does the donor area at the back of your head because stitches are not necessary. The advantage of FUE is that scarring from the incisions becomes nearly undetectable to the human eye, even when your hair is cut quite short.
Good to Know
FUE is a one-day outpatient procedure so you can go home the same day as your surgery. The technique is most effective when hair loss is minimal or when you’re looking to just ‘fill in’ a smaller area, like recession at the temples. FUE is ideal if you’re concerned about scarring and it can be used for most people if their hair loss is caught early enough.
FUE is less invasive and leaves no linear scar in the donor area. However, this advanced procedure may take more time to complete and be more of an investment than the standard type of hair transplant surgery, FUT.
The results from both FUE and FUT are permanent, meaning you can grow your own hair back, but additional, ongoing maintenance is recommended after FUE to protect your investment and help you keep the hair you still have.
The key considerations that determine your candidacy for FUE are the extent of your hair loss and having enough actively growing, healthy donor hair on the back and the sides of your head. Properly identifying the cause of your hair loss is also necessary and only a medical professional can provide that diagnosis. Because of the differences in the way men and women lose their hair, men are often better candidates for surgical hair restoration than women.
FUE is a great option for people who like to wear their hair short. It’s also ideal for those who’ve already had a hair transplant procedure and are looking for more density.
FUE is a routine, outpatient procedure. Depending on the number of grafts you need or want transplanted, your surgery can last 3-8 hours and you can expect to go home the same day. Often, people return to work or their normal activities the very next day. With FUE, you may experience minimal redness and swelling that should subside within a few days to a week. In addition, your hair will be shorter due to the donor area needing to be clipped.
A physician will meet with you before your surgery, answer any questions you may have and review your expectations from FUE. Photos will be taken of your hair and the physician will mark your scalp with a surgical pen to identify the specific areas needing coverage.
Following your FUE procedure, the physician will examine your scalp and post-surgical instructions will be given to you. Pain medication is available, as needed, to alleviate any temporary discomfort. Your scalp may be slightly red or swollen and, as your skin heals, you’ll likely see scabs and experience some itching, just like you would with any minor wound. Based on the normal hair growth cycle, you’ll start to see your new, transplanted hair grow in 3-4 months. You can expect a full head of hair to grow in within 9-12 months after your surgery.

Your investment in FUE will vary based on the number of grafts you receive. That is determined by your current level of hair loss, your desired results, the type of hair you have and the amount of donor hair available. The final price is based on a ‘cost per graft’, which is estimated at your consultation and then confirmed with your physician. The typical investment for an FUE procedure ranges from $4,000 to $12,000. Based on the thickness and density you want, you may plan to undergo more than one procedure over time. Payment plans and financing± options are available because you shouldn’t have to wait to get the hair you really want.
±Financing is subject to credit approval. Monthly payments will vary from lender to lender based upon the amount financed, the terms for which you apply, and your credit standing. Additional terms and conditions may apply depending on the lender selected. Financing is provided by independent finance lenders, and the lenders independently approve the financing and its terms and conditions. Financing for surgery will only be funded after the patient has been accepted for treatment by a Bosley physician.
