In recent years, several studies have surfaced connecting male pattern baldness to a higher risk of developing prostate cancer, leaving many men wondering if they should be concerned. Before you rush off to the doctor, here are a few things you need to know.

Over the past 20 years, there have been many studies exploring the connection between prostate cancer and male pattern baldness. One of the more recent studies, published in 2016 by the American Journal of Epidemiology, found the risk of developing prostate cancer is 1.5 times higher in men with male pattern baldness than in those with no hair loss.

According to scientists in Australia, the type of baldness is the most important indicator. Men with bald spots on the top of their heads (vertex baldness) were more likely to have prostate cancer than those with receding hairlines and frontal baldness.

You may be wondering why there is a connection between hair loss and prostate cancer since they relate to such different areas of the body. The reason the two are linked is that androgens, the male hormones that can cause hair loss, are also connected to prostate cancer. There is no evidence that the hormones cause cancer, but it is proven that prostate cancer responds to androgen-deprivation therapy.

Losing your hair is difficult enough without having to worry about cancer. The good news is that scientists, like researcher Michael Cook, Ph.D.*, of the National Cancer Institute, say losing your hair is not a risk factor for prostate cancer. Additionally, the American Cancer Society states the survival rates for prostate cancer are high, with the 15-year relative survival rate at 95 percent.

Perhaps future studies will bring more clarity on this subject. But, until a clear connection is established, the best thing to do is talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
