Meet Medical Advisor to Hair Club: Dr. Phipps

Dr. Angela Phipps, D.O., A.B.H.R.S., was recently named as the Medical Advisor to Hair Club**. She's a natural fit for the position because she's passionate about hair restoration and the ability it has to change people's lives.

"I help people restore their hair, but I'm really helping them change how they feel about themselves."

"It's an incredible privilege and honor to provide this service for men and women who are losing their hair," said Dr. Phipps. "I help people restore their hair, but I'm really helping them change how they feel about themselves. It's the most gratifying thing I could ever do for someone."

Dr. Phipps, who grew up in a small town in Ohio, had originally planned to become a nurse anesthetist. While seeking her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, she met two nurse anesthetists and was given the opportunity to work alongside them. The experience quickly made her realize that it wasn't her ideal career.

With her mother's encouragement, Dr. Phipps was inspired to further her education and become a doctor. "I took the entrance exam, was accepted and went off to medical school to find my true passion" said Dr. Phipps.

She earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV. Dr. Phipps then completed her surgical internship and trained in the fields of Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat or ENT) and facial plastic surgery. Next, she finished a Family Medicine Residency at Suncoast Hospital in Largo, FL. To further her education and experience, Dr. Phipps completed a specialized fellowship in surgical hair restoration at Ziering Medical in Beverly Hills, CA. Today, Dr. Phipps is board certified in medical/surgical hair restoration by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery.

The decision to become a surgical hair restoration physician was made when Dr. Phipps' father urged her to help him with his own thinning hair. "My dad experienced hair loss at a very young age and it really restricted his life," said Dr. Phipps. "He said I should do something about it - and figure out how to get hair back on his head!"

Up for the challenge, Dr. Phipps worked with a physician in Florida and assisted with her father's hair transplantation surgery. After her father's hair grew in, Dr. Phipps recalls his quality of life changing dramatically - at age 60. When she was a child, Dr. Phipps' father felt extremely limited by his hair; he never rode roller coasters or went swimming with her. Surgical hair restoration for him was very liberating and he found a new sense of freedom. He even expressed that he finally liked seeing his reflection in the mirror again.

"I told my husband that if I can change one other person's life - the way they feel about themselves and their quality of life - the way it has changed my dad's, then that's all I want to do for the rest of my medical career," said Dr. Phipps.

After several years in practice in Beverly Hills and Las Vegas, Dr. Phipps and her husband moved to Raleigh, NC, to be closer to family. Shortly thereafter, she joined Hair Club's sister company, Bosley Medical Group, as a hair restoration physician.

Dr. Phipps currently performs 20-30 hair restoration surgeries per month at her office in Raleigh, NC, and she incorporates her experience with her father into her daily practice. "I treat all my patients the way I would want a doctor to treat my dad," said Dr. Phipps. "I think my patients can sense my true compassion, concern and empathy for what they're going through. And, I feel privileged that they trust me with something so dear to them, like their self-image."

As Hair Club's Medical Advisor, Dr. Phipps is enthusiastic about the opportunity to share her knowledge to help men and women with hair loss. "Not everyone is a candidate for hair replacement surgery, so it's important for people to have other options - like the solutions offered by Hair Club," said Dr. Phipps.

Hair Club provides all-proven solutions for men and women of every age with every level of hair loss. "I want people to know there is something that can be done about their thinning hair," said Dr. Phipps. She encourages people who feel like they're losing their hair to schedule a consultation at Hair Club. "By meeting with a hair loss expert sooner rather than later, you'll have more options available."
