What You Can Learn from Tiger Woods’ Battle with Hair Loss

April 11, 2018

Celebrated professional golfer Tiger Woods is one of the most successful, recognizable athletes in the world. He’s usually photographed on the golf course wearing a winning smile and his trademark baseball cap. But every now and then, an intrepid photographer will capture him tipping his hat to the crowd, revealing a problem that affects around two in three men by the age of 35: male pattern baldness.

Woods’ hairline exhibits one of the telltale signs of the most common cause of hair loss—androgenetic alopecia. The hair follicles in men born with this hereditary condition have a sensitivity to a naturally-occurring hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Signs of male pattern baldness include thinning at the temples and/or the crown, where the follicles are least resistant to DHT. Because male pattern baldness is progressive, over time, these two thinning areas meet in the middle, leaving only a horseshoe-shaped band of hair on the back and sides of the head.

Perhaps because his own father had a receding hairline, Woods thought his condition was inevitable and insurmountable. In a 2014 interview with Fox Sports, Woods said his hair loss is a no-win fight. But, he’s only half right.

While Woods can’t do anything to change his genetics, he doesn’t have to accept defeat in the fight against hair loss.

As thinning hair only worsens over time, early detection is key. Unfortunately, many men don’t notice their hair is thinning until they’ve lost more than 50% of it! Wearing a hat frequently, like Woods does, can make it easy to ignore the problem. But, guys with a history of hair loss in their family should check their hair often, looking for recession at the hairline and thinning at the crown. If the hairs in those areas are getting shorter and wispier, it’s time to act. The sooner you do something about your hair loss, the more options you have.
