How Hair Loss Actually Works

Hair grows in cycles. Each follicle moves through a growth phase (anagen), a brief transition phase (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen) before the hair falls out and the cycle starts again. On a healthy scalp, most follicles are in the growth phase at any given time.

Hair loss happens when something disrupts that cycle: follicles spend too long resting, shrink gradually, or stop producing new hair altogether. Understanding which part of the cycle is disrupted, and why, is the foundation of diagnosing hair loss correctly. Skipping that step is where most self-directed treatment attempts fall short.

Androgenetic Alopecia: The Most Common Cause

Androgenetic alopecia, also called pattern baldness or pattern hair loss, is the most common type of hair loss in both men and women. Telogen Effluvium: Stress-Triggered Shedding

Telogen effluvium happens when a significant physical or emotional stressor pushes large numbers of follicles into the resting phase at the same time. Common triggers include major surgery, severe illness, extreme psychological stress, or rapid weight loss.

Lupus and other autoimmune diseases can also affect the scalp, sometimes causing rashes or sores that contribute to hair loss, while medications used to manage autoimmune conditions, like steroids and immunosuppressants, can themselves cause temporary shedding as a side effect.

Medications and Medical Treatments Linked to Hair Loss

A number of medications and medical treatments can affect the hair growth cycle as a side effect. This one is often frustrating, because you’re usually already managing another health condition. Common categories include:

  • Chemotherapy drugs, the most widely known cause of medication-related hair loss
  • Blood thinners and cholesterol-lowering medications
  • Certain antidepressants, including some SSRIs
  • Oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy
  • Corticosteroids and immunosuppressants
  • Some acne medications, including isotretinoin
